EMDR Intensives

Standard EMDR treatment typically involves months of weekly or fortnightly sessions. Intensive treatment, on the other hand, compresses this process into a more concentrated format. This can mean daily sessions over a week or two, working on a particular goal, or sessions lasting up to three hours. Ideally, a combination of both. It is similar to taking an accelerated language course compared to one lesson a week, both deliver results but the intensity and impact differ significantly.

Research on EMDR intensives is encouraging. Studies suggest this format can produce results that potentially surpass traditional approaches. The condensed timeline often adds momentum, allowing for deeper, more continuous work on traumatic and unprocessed memories.

One of the main reasons people choose intensives is for the level of focus that it allows. If you have a specific fear, compulsion, or traumatic memory you want to be free from, this approach can be particularly effective. The results are typically long-lasting, making it a compelling option for those seeking significant change in a shorter timeframe.

As with anything, it is necessary to maintain realistic expectations. For those grappling with complex trauma or attachment issues in particular, it is important to remember that treatment will need to be multifaceted. While intensives can still yield great results, the process may need to be goal specific.

Intensives also offer practical advantages. They can be ideal for clients who struggle with consistency in weekly therapy, those with demanding schedules, or individuals who live far from their clinicians.

The main setback is that Medicare only covers one 50-minute session per day, this makes EMDR intensives a financial investment. You would need to weigh this cost against the potential benefits in your particular financial circumstances.
