ACESO
CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Aceso (AκεσÏŽ) was the Greek Goddess of the healing process. Contrary to her sister Panacea (cure-all), Aceso represented the process of healing, rather than cure itself. After a patient was assessed medically, Aceso personified the body's and psyche’s complex healing process. To the Ancient Greeks, the healing process was a divine and mystical system. In today’s therapeutic approach, this is less so. We use evidence-based treatments and our scientific knowledge of the process of trauma, emotional patterns, and personal histories to understand and assist in the healing journey of each individual.

Katerina is the Founder and Clinical Director of On Smith – Centre for Traumatology. She is a registered Clinical Psychologist, Board Approved Supervisor, and EMDR Accredited Practitioner with extensive experience working across both public and private mental health settings.

Katerina understands that beginning therapy can feel daunting. She aims to create a warm, welcoming, and thoughtful space where people feel genuinely understood and accepted. Her approach is collaborative and tailored to each individual, recognising that every person's experiences, goals and pace are unique. Whether someone is seeking support for a specific difficulty or wishes to engage in deeper long-term therapeutic work, treatment is adapted to meet them where they are.

Katerina works primarily with adults experiencing the effects of trauma, complex trauma, adverse childhood experiences, attachment difficulties, dissociation, grief, and challenges related to identity, meaning and relationships. She has a particular interest in helping people move beyond survival and reconnect with a greater sense of vitality, authenticity and fulfilment in their lives.

Her therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing primarily on Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Schema Therapy, and existential psychotherapy. Her work is informed by attachment theory, neuroscience and somatic approaches, allowing therapy to address both the psychological and physiological effects of trauma.
Alongside individual therapy, Katerina works with intimate relationships and relationship systems, integrating EMDR with attachment-informed and relational approaches where appropriate. She also offers EMDR Therapy Intensives for those wishing to engage in more focused, in-depth treatment over a shorter period of time.

In addition to her clinical work, Katerina facilitates therapeutic groups focused on trauma recovery, emotional regulation and nervous system health. These include group EMDR interventions following acute traumatic events, as well as groups integrating Polyvagal Theory, creative expression and art-based therapeutic practices. She has previously facilitated group EMDR interventions in response to large-scale community trauma, including following the Bondi tragedy.

Katerina enjoys working with LGBTIQA+ individuals and relationship systems, providing an affirming, compassionate and non-judgmental therapeutic environment. She also remains committed to supporting refugees, people seeking asylum, and other communities affected by conflict and displacement. Her current pro bono focus is providing psychological support to soldiers serving on the front lines in Ukraine.
